THE “QUINTA”
Quinta das Amendoeiras has been in the Negreiros family since the 1940s, when it was bought by Joaquim Trigo de Negreiros, father of the current owner. This acquisition marked the return of the family to the Douro, from where they had departed during the phylloxera plague at the end of the 19th century.
No one knows precisely when the winery was built. What is known is that the winery produced Port wine which was sold to Cockburn’s.
NEW BUT STILL OLD
The winery at Quinta das Amendoeiras is new, indeed, but it is still old, as a result of the refurbishment of a old building.
In 2004 the Negreiros family decided to rehabilitate the winery in order to produce a DOC Douro red wine. The ‘new’ winery was up and running in a very short time… and the grapes from the 2004 harvest were the first to pass through its doors.
Because Negreiros Wine is a proof that simplicity can inhabit the grandeur.

HOW THE WINES ARE MADE
The Negreiros wines are made with grapes that are picked manually in small boxes (to avoid they arrive in the winery already smashed and oxidized) and before being troden by human feet in granite tanks, they are refrigerated to 10ºC (to reduce the microbiological activity to the minimum until the innoculation of selected yeasts).
The option to the human feet troding was taken because it´s the best way to smash the grapes but not the seeds, and at Negreiros they believe this is one of the reasons why their tanins are so round and the wine so smooth.
Negreiros wines remains for 2 days in the granite tanks, and they use to transfer the must to fermentation stainless vats – this way they try to have the best of both worlds: the big extraction on the tanks and the controlled fermentation on the vats.
The Negreiros are now prepearing to start exploring tourism – in a very small scale in this magical place – so all wine lovers should take advantage and visit them for an amazing wine experience.
