Interview of Mr. Emmanuel PUJOL – Winemaker – Domaine Pujol-Izard for AsiaImportNews – Exclusive
Could you please tell us the story of your winery, when it was created and how it developed decades after decades ?
Pujol Izard is a union of two wine making families which decided to unite their strengths and share the work within the frame of their expansion, by creating an 110 ha winery, with a various and exhaustive range of wines. Two brothers Jean-Claude and Yves Pujol and a friend from childhood André Izard have the same education in making wine as well as common interests.
Some parcels are owned by the Pujol’s family since 1880 or before : Louis Biscan first, Edouard Pujol his son-in-law, then Louis PUJOL his grandson have succeeded.
Nowadays, the Louis Pujol children’s Jean Claude and Yves and grand childrens Emmanuel and Stéphanie are following their steps
Producing bulk wines in the past, they really started to develop the public market in the 1970’s. Then Jean Claude Pujol Created several cuvées in the 1980’s to develop the bottles market to reach today a 20 cuvées range.
Meanwhile the vineyard was growing to reach 55 ha today and in 2000 André Izard, also coming from a vinegrower family for several generations, join the Pujol’s with his actual 55ha.
3 generations are working together currently : the knowledge and the wit of the elder and the accuracy and motivation of the youngest.
What sort of wines are you producing ?
We produce bag-in-box (with a constant quality every year) ; several color and quality for everydays wines. Beside that we have a 21 cuvées range. Whites, rosés and reds going from every day and easy drinking wines to premium wines including a late harvest.
How important are your export distribution compared to national distribution ?
Our export distribution is about 45% more targeted on bottles, less on bag in box.
What sort of distributors are your customers ?
It’s what we call the traditional market ; wine shop/ cellar, restaurant, fine deli, public customers through commercial agents companies.
Why your wines are different from other wineries in your area ?
The particularity of our limestone-clay terroir based on sandstone gives is the gentle tannins, present but gentle, integrated in the wine structure. This makes our wines easy to appreciate for everybody even if some of them are fullbodied and kind of powerfull wine. I think we can get a nice elegance in our wines on this terroir.
Do you produce grapes in a organic or environmental friendly method, or with general methods ?
We are not organic however our production is « reasonable ». We seed the row between vines with grass providing nutriments to the soil wich is natural fertilization, also we don’t use weed killer anymore. The grass also avoid erosion. In the winery, big effort are made to save as much water and energy as we can. We are very carefull and gentle with our wines using just sulfites needed.
Are your wines already distributed in Asia, and if not what are the countries you are looking for new distributors ?
Yes we are distributed at Wenzhou, Shangaï and Hong Kong, but looking for distribution in other Asian coutry.
Is there anything who want to add about your wines, story or any news ?
About « reasonable » production, we are followed by « Vin et Santé » magazine wich makes analysis to find pesticides. The result is 0% pesticides in our wines.
We are not producing cleaner by financial interest but more by health and environmental interest. The nature feed us so we have to respect it.
