Interview of Mr.Thomas Webb – Commercial Manager – Thelema Mountain Vineyards for AsiaImportNews – Exclusive
Could you please tell us the story of your winery, when it was created and how it developed decades after decades ?
The Webb family bought the Thelema property in 1983, with the plan of establishing a vineyard. The first vines were planted in 1984, and today there is a total of 50 hectares of vineyard planted on the 157 hectare property.
What sort of wines are you producing ?
Thelema produces a wide range wines, including lean and crisp Sauvignon blanc, rich and textured Chardonnay, soft and spicy Shiraz, and lean and fresh Cabernet sauvignon.
How important are your export distribution compared to national distribution ?
All our markets are important to us. We sell 70% of our wine in South Africa, and 30% is exported.
What sort of distributors are your customers ?
Our distributors are generally smaller, quality focused companies, looking to hand-sell high end international wines.
Do you produce grapes in a organic or environmental friendly method, or with general methods ?
We believe that a healthy vineyard is the most important aspect of good wine, and we focus heavily on environmentally friendly vineyards practices. All the little bugs and plants in the vineyard are import to us !
Are your wines already distributed in Asia, and if not what are the countries you are looking for new distributors ?
We have some distribution in Asia, but China and Japan are markets that we are still looking to develop in.
Thank you Mr.Thomas Webb – Commercial Manager – Thelema Mountain Vineyards for your time and answers!
