DOMAINE SCHMITT & CARRER : Alsace Wines of Outstanding Quality

Sylvie, Roland, and Anne-Cécile CARRER run Domaine Schmitt & Carrer, a family company located in Kientzheim (Alsace). The estate includes 14 hectares of certified Organic Agriculture by Ecocert.

Just a few families have been able to trace their origins back hundreds of years with great success. Fewer people may claim to have worked in the vineyards for three generations. The Schmitts have been wine growers in Alsace since at least the first half of the 17th century. The current winery has been in the Schmitt family since 1985, when Roger Schmitt founded it with his son-in-law, Roland Carrer.

With his wife, Sylvie, and their daughter, Anne-Cécile, Roland now runs a winery. Domaine Schmitt-Carrer is located in the village of Kientzheim in the Haut-Rhin district of Alsace in northeastern France.

Vineyards of Domaine Schmitt Carrer’s span 15 hectares and are cultivated entirely organically. The vineyards have been certified organic since 2012. The soil is predominantly clay-limestone, with some marl-limestone. Sylvaner, Pinot Noir, Blanc and Gris, Riesling, Gewurztraminer, and Muscat are among the seven known Alsace grape varieties.

Pinot Noir is the only red grape variety included in the Alsace appellation. Among their many wines are three Grand Crus: Schlossberg, Furstentum, and Wineck-Schlossberg. The Grand Cru vineyards make up 21% of the Domaine Schmitt-vineyards Carrer’s and produce some truly exceptional wines.

Domaine Schmitt-Carrer Winemaking Methods

Domaine Schmitt-Carrer produces a Crémant, a rosé, and a number of unique late harvest wines, as well as classic single-variety wines. For late harvest wines, the grapes are pressed for about 7 to 8 hours, which is about twice as long as normal. This is to get rid of even more sugar. To provide additional security, the grapes are carefully packed into small boxes. Harvesting is done by hand.

Very recently, Domaine Schmitt-Carrer has joined Asia Awards 2021 and won GOLD MEDAL Award in this prestigious competition:
