Santa Lucia winery has been producing wines exclusively from its own predominantly indigenous vineyards since its foundation and which are to be found west of Corato at 300 m above sea level. These vineyards are Melograno, Santa Lucia, Tufaroli and Castigliola and they cover an area of just under 37 acres. The fields are surrounded by Coratina olive groves that produce Extra Virgin olive oil with a fruity and naturally spicy flavour. ; it does not buy grapes or wine from outside suppliers or growers.
The company’s philosophy revolves around producing individual wines with meticulous care. This begins with preparing the soil, followed by the selection, reproduction and planting of the best clones using a bio-dynamic approach in the fields.
The controlled use of French oak Allier and TronÇais barrels and the abolition of stabilization and filtration practices makes for wines that are the highest expression of artisan tradition and respect the best qualities of its territory: wines that are typical, recognizable and well-structured with a mature and fruity taste.
Very recently, Azienda Agricola Santa Lucia wines have been recognized and awarded Gold and Silver Medal by Asia Import News Wine Challenge 2020.
Il Melograno – Castel del Monte – DOP – 2015
Awarded Gold by Asia Import News
Dark ruby red, with a wide bouquet of ripe red fruit and spices (red plums, black cherries, raspberries). It is an intense dry wine, rich and balanced, with soft tannins and a long fi nish of berries and traces of spices.
Properly tannic in some vintage, it can need oxygenation before tasting. The total acidity is 5.5/1000, Alcohol 13,5%. It has a high content of dry extracts and polifenolies. The grapes, 100% “uva di Troia” since the 2003 vintage, are fermented in temperature-controlled rotating stainless steel tanks with the hot and cold technique.
The wine matures for 6 to 8 months in 35 hl. Slovenian oak barrels. It is bottled in the autumn after vintage, and released for sale 6 months later. It is ideal for red meats, roasts, pork chops, grilled mushrooms, and aged cheese. The bottle should be opened at 16- 18° C a few minutes before serving.
Gazza Ladra – FIUANO – IGP Puglia – 2018 – ORGANIC
Awarded Gold by Asia Import News
Wine obtained by the soft pressing of 100% white Fiano grapes planted with a density of 5.000 plants per hectare, farmed using the single guyot system. The Fiano vine, famous for its vigour and strength and already successfully planted in Apulia, starting from the 2001 vintage is at the first regional test in quality bottles.
The high acidity, typical of this grape, allows the plants to overcome the summer in the Murge hills preserving completely its genetic endowment. This does not always happen with the others indigenous grapes. Intense yellow, with a persistent aroma of ripe citrus fruits, lemon jam, white flowers, white fruit and caramel. Alcohol 13%, and elegant salinity which is well balanced with the structure and the body of this wine.
The dry taste, the richness of the structure, and the intensity of the aroma make this wine almost unique in the panorama of white wines produced inside Apulia borders. It’s good with appetizers, perfect with summer Mediterranean dishes, particularly raw sea-food, calamari, cuttlefi sh, mussels, octopus and generally with fi sh. Drink it young, within three years after vintage, at about 12°C. Uncork a few minutes before tasting.
Riserva Le More – Castel del Monte – DOCG – 2013
Awarded Silver by Asia Import News
Riserva Le More is produced under the Castel del Monte DOC appellation at the Santa Lucia Estate. Since the 2001 vintage, it has come entirely from a careful selection of the clone of Uva di Troia grape with “small grapes”. The old vines were planted at the beginning of the 90s with a density of 4.000 plants/ha, andare farmed with the single guyot system.
The grapes are harvested from mid to late October; after a tight cluster selection they are softly pressed and maceration takes place in rotating stainless steel tanks, with fully controlled temperatures (warm and cold). After fermentation, the wine is aged for 12 months in 228 lt. new french allier and tronçais barriques; it is then fi ned in the bottle for an additional 18-month period before release.
All the fi ning takes place in year-round temperature and humidity controlled storage. The annual production is of about 5.000 bottles. It is a harmonious full-bodied wine; rich, intense, fruity and full of sweet tannins, soft and sapid. A deep and dark garnet colour; ample and persistent with fl avours of blackberries, dark cherries and spices; the aromas of ripe blackberry, black-currant, raspberry wood and spices. Long on personality. Its alcoholic content is about 14%, and the polyfenolic density – in the best years – are above 4.000 gr/lt. It is recommended with game, roasts, pork meats, aged cheese, grilled mushrooms.
The wine is best decanted before serving at 18- 20° C. Since the 2001 vintage, without diminishing any native note, we could say that this bottle has “elegance”. This is due both to our efforts in farming the “Uva di Troia” vineyard and to the vinifi cation techniques
