Interview of Ms.Diane Losfelt-Grill – Winemaker and Owner – Château de l’Engarran for AsiaImportNews – Exclusive
Could you please tell us the story of your winery, when it was created and how it developed decades after decades ?
In 1632 was the foundation of the estate in the center of the historical terroir of Saint Georges d’Orques. 5 different families have been in charge of the estate since its foundation. The Grill family now in charge, Diane Losfelt-Grill is the fifth generation of this family and the 3rd generation of women to be at the lead of the estate. Chateau de l’Engarran is a “protected historical monument” in the style of the XVIIIth century with a 3 ha Parc “à la française” all around the castle, decorated with statues and water ponds. All the decorations on the walls of the estate and in the parc illustrate the link between history and wine making. There is a real “style” in l’Engarran, elegance is a dedicated moto.
What sort of wines are you producing ?
All colors red rosé and white, we do wines deeply linked with their terroir: each cuvee has a precise identity and expresses different appellations and blending:
For the red wines 4 different appellations: In AOP: Languedoc, Grés de Montpellier, Saint Georges d’Orques and also IGP Pays d’Oc. Some red wines are easy drinking wines and some are really intense full bodied with a real aging potential. All depends of the grapes, the terroir.
White wines are only produced in Pays d’Oc and only with the grape variety sauvignon but for 2 different cuvees, all expressing a different aspect of the sauvignon in Languedoc… a superb grape variety!
Rose: I am “miss Pink”! I do believe in the power of Rosé, in its specific expression and I think this wine is like “a style of life” elegant and light. I produce 2 different rosé one in AOC Languedoc st Georges d’Orques and one in Pays d’Oc.
.
How important are your export distribution compared to national distribution ?
20%, we are looking for new importers found of wines expressing a real personality and having a history
What sort of distributors are your customers ?
Individuals, restaurants, retail shops, industries and clubs, importers… everyone, because my wines are wines to be shared!
Why your wines are different from other wineries in your area ?
Because of their elegance, their soft tannins, their full maturity. I am a women winemaker and my nose and palate are trained for elegance and power.
Do you produce grapes in a organic or environmental friendly method, or with general methods ?
Environmental friendly method under the label TERRA VITIS since 2002; I use no pesticides against insects and I plough my vineyard, but I am not entirely organic because the use of copper in that method is to important and copper destroys the life of insects in the soil and therefore limits the expression of the terroir.
Are your wines already distributed in Asia, and if not what are the countries you are looking for new distributors ?
Yes they are in Japan and China…but we can increase our sales!
Is there anything who want to add about your wines, story or any news ?
A women’s wine is a special wine, it is not a “feminine” wine, it has a femine “touch” or “style”, it’s a wine of elegance and power, sensible and charming, strong and velvet
