Famille Sumeire – Wines

Interview of Ms. Sophie Denante  Sumeire – Co Owner with Olivier Sumeire – Famille Sumeire for AsiaImportNews – Exclusive

Could you please tell us the story of your winery, when it was created and how it developed decades after decades ?

Of very ancient provincial origin, the Sumeire family is settled in the village of Trets, facing the Mount Sainte Victoire since the XIIIth century. During the XIXth century, the family develops its activity as wine merchant with Gabriel (1880-1968) and then with his son Elie (1909-1994).

With the XXth century, new excessive purchases of vineyards, are made with their rehabilitation, management, to allow Gabriel and Jean-Pierre (Elie’s sons) marketing the family production from 1987. Olivier and Sophie, Gabriel’s children, join the family business in 1991 and 1992.

Today, the vineyards cover 300 hectares and are classified in AOC Côtes de Provence and Côtes de Provence Sainte Victoire. In the lineage of the ancestral traditions of viticulture -without weed killer and traditional ploughing- they have decided to follow the rules of reasoned agriculture, protecting environnement and nature.

What sort of wines are you producing ?

The grapes of Château Coussin in Trets, Château Maupague in Puyloubier ( both AOC Sainte Victoire Côtes de Provence ) and Château L’Afrique in Cuers (AOC Côtes de Provence) are all grown following the charter « Nutrition Méditerranéenne en Provence » to which they adhere.

How important are your export distribution compared to national distribution ?

We export 26% of our production and we have  64% national distribution.

What sort of distributors are your customers ?

Depends on each country . In France we do sell to restaurants, wine cellars, wholesale, supermarkets. In the foreign countries, only traditional sector.

Why your wines are different from other wineries in your area ?

A combination of : our experience of wine makers ( 8 generations), exceptionnal soils for our estates located in the different zones of the appellation ( Sainte Victoire and Pierrefeu) ,  always a goal of quality , and possibility to reach significant markets ( 300 ha of vineyards)

Do you produce grapes in a organic or environmental friendly method, or with general methods ?

We cultivate our vineyards following the rules of reasoned agriculture, protecting the environment as much as possible.

Are your wines already distributed in Asia, and if not what are the countries you are looking for new distributors ?

We are looking for importers in all Asia.

Is there anything who want to add about your wines, story or any news ?

César ( 1921-1998) the famous french sculptor known for his compressions signed a cuvée “César à Sumeire” as a mark of fondness for the Sumeire family and for his native Provence.

This cuvée is packed in a case made from a compression of Famille Sumeire labels, original piece of art created by César.

Château Coussin’s and Château l’Afrique finest parcels selected for optimum quality.
