Interview of Mr. José Moro – President & Winemaker – Emilio Moro for AsiaImportNews – Exclusive
Could you please tell us the story of your winery, when it was created and how it developed decades after decades ?
I come from a family that has been committed to winemaking and viticulture for decades. My grandfather taught my father everything he knew about wine, and he in turn taught us, the third generation, his love and passion for winemaking.
At first, Emilio Moro was a small and modest winery in the Ribera del Duero. Nowadays we export our wines to over 50 countries around the world, and our brand is earning greater recognition by wine critics and industry professionals.
This was achieved through years of hard work and an insatiable passion for what we do.
What sort of wines are you producing ?
We produce 100% Tempranillo wines, but we call our grape Tinto Fino. It is the winery’s best asset.
All our vines are grafted with the purest clone of the Tempranillo grape, that comes from the ancient vines of our Valderramiro vineyard. Our grapes are smaller and our bunches are looser than the regular Tempranillo grapes. This is the way we guarantee a homogeneous production of great quality wines.
How important are your export distribution compared to national distribution ?
80% of the wines are distributed nationally, 20% are shipped to other countries. Emilio Moro has loyal consumers in Spain who keep returning to our wines vintage after vintage.
What sort of distributors are your customers ?
Our distributors are an essential part of our business, so we work with top distributors in each market, who specialize in high quality wines and are knowledgeable about the Ribera del Duero area.
Why your wines are different from other wineries in your area ?
As mentioned before, the winery’s biggest asset is our Tinto Fino clone, unique in the entire world. That being said, we wouldn’t be able to do what we do without the heritage that my father and grandfather left behind, and the tremendous passion we feel for what we do.
Our winemaking process is also part of our secret: maximum quality in every stage, carefully selected materials and a continuous implementation of innovation techniques helps us ensure the quality of our wines. Some examples are the Oresteo system in our fermentation tanks, the use of drones in our vineyards to determine the quality and conditions of each plot.
Do you produce grapes in a organic or environmental friendly method, or with general methods ?
In Emilio Moro we feel the utmost respect for our terroir. All our techniques are environmentally friendly, and we don’t use artificial irrigation or chemical products that might damage our environment.
We are currently producing a new wine, free of sulfites and certified organic, in order to expand our wines to those people who are allergic to sulfites. The winemaking method for this new organic wine reminds me of how my father used to produce wine.
Are your wines already distributed in Asia, and if not what are the countries you are looking for new distributors ?
Yes, they are distributed in Asia in the following countries: China, Japan, Taiwan, Korea, Singapore, Thailand, New Zealand and Australia.
We are working to find distribution in Vietnam, India, Sri Lanka, Arab Emirates, Indonesia.
Is there anything who want to add about your wines, story or any news ?
Our winery is changing and growing quickly, and therefore there are always exciting things to share.
The first thing that stands out is that 2015 is, in my opinion, the best vintage the Ribera del Duero has ever seen, so we have huge expectations for our wines, both at a national and international level.
We are also big in the innovation department. With a groundbreaking app for the Ribera del Duero, we have extended the digital transformation to the vineyard. The use of this app avoids wasting time in unnecessary trips and its use allows an optimum control of the crops. This will enable us to take urgent measures in the case of extraordinary situations. But also, it will help us control the productivity of our vineyards, access climate data, manage work reports… It has endless possibilities.
Another piece of exciting news is the new white wine we are working on. This will be a Godello wine, and the area of production will be Bierzo, also in Spain. We hope to be able to release the wine to the market in the following year.
Thank you Mr. José Moro – President & Winemaker – Emilio Moro for your time and answers!
