Could you please tell us the story of your Winery, when it was created and how it developed decades after decades ?
Lykos Winery was founded in 1991 and is located in Evia Island, just 80 km from Athens at the area of Malakonda, Eretria. My father had initially a small tavern where he produced the wine for its customers using traditional methods. By the time the wine became popular and people wanted to buy for their personal consumption at home. This is how the idea was created and with a lot of effort with my wife started the wine business. It’s a family orientated winery and is situated next to the family`s restaurant where is still running and both coexist for wine tourists.
The vision of the family is to contribute to the continuous improvement of the Evian vineyard. Today all the family with my three sons are working towards this aim.
What sort of wines are you producing ?
We are producing indigenous varieties as well as international varieties. Malagousia, Agiorgitiko and Assyrtiko are the three greek varieties that stands up from the rest portfolio. From the international varieties I would say that Sauvignon Blanc, Grenache Rough, Viognier, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah are very well made and popular. All the grapes are greek and selected with special care.
How important are your export distribution compared to national distribution ?
The majority of our production goes abroad. The percentage is around 60%. This is very essential for the availability of the Winery having in mind that Greece is a small market with many wine producers that are continuously increasing. Greek wines are excellent in quality and it`s matter of time and good marketing to find the place they deserve in the global market.
What sort of distributors are your customers ?
You can find Lykos wines, except from Greece, at many countries of the European Union such as Cyprus, Germany, England, Belgium and The Netherlands as well as in China, Canada and in some states in the USA.
Why your wines are different from other wineries in your area ?
Our wines are made with personal care, love and passion. We put all our knowledge comparing it with the technological equipment. The unique collaboration of sun, earth and human knowledge creates an explosive effect, combining the ideal terroir aura of Evian with the uniqueness of the cold winter which favors the phenolic ripening of the grapes.
All the rich experience of creation that has passed from grandparent to grandchildren with passion and love has resulted in our wines receiving numerous international awards.
Do you produce grapes in a organic or environmental friendly method, or with general methods ?
Our vineyards are spanning at both sides of south central Evia, mountainous Boeotia and in the Koutsi area of Nemea in Peloponnese. We use mainly traditional methods comparing with biological agriculture. We cooperate with small producers having personal contact. The collection of the grapes is made by using hands and not big machines that harm the quality of the grapes. We are a medium size winery and our focus is on the quality with respect to our consumers. We would never sacrifice quality for mass production.
Are your wines already distributed in Asia, and if not what are the countries you are looking for new distributors ?
Our wines are currently distributed in China and our aim is to expand further in the Asian market as there is a lot of potential and opportunities. We are open for cooperation to new importers in Asia and especially in Korea, Thailand and Japan. So far we have very positive feedback and we hope that this is going to happen soon.
Is there anything who want to add about your wines, story or any news ?
Today, the expert trilogy of Panseloinos, the exotic Malagousia, matured oak barrelled Iliatoras, mighty Kratistos and the rest of wine collection, results in the ideal value for money making our products of true appeal to all wine lovers.
The visited winery tour of the underground cellars with oak barrels and the tasting room is a unique experience combined with the tasteful suggestions of the homonymous family`s restaurant.
A visit to our winery in Malakonda, which overlooks the main road of wines of Evia, is the ideal trip to the countryside with its archaeological sites and diamond tastes of Lykos Restaurant which has over 60 years of culinary tradition!
