Château Malbat
Interview of Ms.CAILLEMET Mylène –  SALES MANAGER – Chateau Malbat for AsiaImportNews – Exclusive

Could you please tell us the story of your winery, when it was created and how it developed decades after decades ?

Since 1865, Château Malbat is the pride and joy of the Rochet family.

Alphonse Rochet bought Château Malbat in 1865, during the phylloxera epidemic. Despite these troubled and complex times for Bordeaux wine, Alphonse succeeded in building the foundations of a vineyard, which has since been then been passed on from generation to generation.

Nowadays, Fabienne, Martine and Daniel, 3 brothers and sisters, manage the family estate and intend to pass it on to the next generations.

Château Malbat – History

What sort of wines are you producing ?

Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Sauvignon blanc et gris are mainly used to make Bordeaux and Bordeaux superieur appellation red, rosé and white wines.

Château Malbat – Vineyard

How important are your export distribution compared to national distribution ?

5 years ago, the Rochet’s family used to sell all its wine in bulk to French negotiators.

Since then, they decided to develop bottles sales, especially on the export markets. This strategy has been very successful, as they now sell 80% of the production on foreign markets against only 20% on domestic market.

What sort of distributors are your customers ?

Our current distributors are mainly importers in many countries (Germany, Belgium, USA, China, Japan, Singapore, Australia, New Zealand, Brasil…)

In France, wines are sold through wholesalers and negociants.

Why your wines are different from other wineries in your area ?

Located at the heart of the Bordeaux wine region, between the Garonne and the Dordogne rivers, the family vineyard stretches over 85 hectares (210 acres) and benefits from a climate perfectly suited to the production of the finest Bordeaux wines.

Indeed, this oceanic climate combines morning mists, which provide high humidity in the atmosphere, with a strong sunshine during the rest of the day favoring grape ripening.

Château Malbat – Grapes

Do you produce grapes in a organic or environmental friendly method, or with general methods ?

Château Malbat has recently joined “Vision vigne”, an advisory agency specialized in sustainable development, and is now officially committed to following an eco-responsible approach.

Are your wines already distributed in Asia, and if not what are the countries you are looking for new distributors ?

Some of our wines are already sold in Asia (China, Japan, Singapore) but the Rochet’s family now owes 6 Châteaux, so we have lots of opportunities to develop our sales in Asian markets through those different brands.

Is there anything who want to add about your wines, story or any news ?

The Rochet family has successfully developed over time, finding a perfect balance between authenticity and modernity, and now produces a wide range of wines so as to give pleasure and satisfaction to everyone.

Their wines are awarded medals every year and are mentioned in the most prestigious guides. Work done in the vineyard and the cellar never stops being recognized and rewarded…!
