Interview of Ms.FLORENCE QUIOT – OWNER & CEO – FAMILLE QUIOT for AsiaImportNews – Exclusive
Could you please tell us the story of your winery, when it was created and how it developed decades after decades ?
Over the course of the centuries and throughout our family history, the Quiot family, winemakers since 1748, have established wonderful properties which are constantly being enlarged. The 13th generation of the family, whose I’m part of, currently works the estate
THE RHONE VALLEY PART:
The story began in Chateauneuf-du-Pape where Antoine Quiot acquired a few hectares of vines in 1748. Today, the Domaine du Vieux Lazaret spreads over more than 100 hectares with some of the land located in Ventoux.
At the same time, the Domaine Duclaux was established in the 1750s and Famille Quiot takes care of this estate since 1987. 2001, the Duclaux family’s final descendant, Emmeline, passed away and left the estate to Florence and Jean-Baptiste QUIOT.
After looking to expand into the Rhône area for a long time, the Quiot family bought the Château du Trignon in 2006 and in 2008 enlarged it with 10 hectares of Vacqueyras grapes and 2 hectares of Beaumes de Venise grapes.
THE PROVENCE PART
Close to Aix en Provence at the foot of Mont Sainte Victoire, the Domaine Houchart came into the family in 1890. In 2002, Domaine de Verlaque was added and soon, Chateau Vaillant, In Palette will give it own crop.
Today, Florence & Jean-Baptiste (13th generation of Quiot family) take care of the all the estates (nearly 300 hectares) (helped by their parents) and export most of their wines (1.2 million bottles/year).
What sort of wines are you producing ?
All our wines are real “Vigneron” wines. Traditional but caring a modernism style. We produce a very large range of Southern Rhône Valley wines and Provence wines from various colors and from several appellations. Our wines are middle and high range level and are known from quality/price ratio. We have awards and press from all over the world. All the wines we are selling are ready for drinking, as to suit with new consumption habits.
How important are your export distribution compared to national distribution?
We export 97% of our production, in more than 40 countries. We are specialized in exportation for more than 30 years. Our main markets are the USA, Canada and Scandinavia but our wines are also in Latin America, European countries, Asia and Oceania.
What sort of distributors are your customers ?
We generally work with importers country by country. We can work either with very small one, or with huge one such as state monopoly for example in Canada. Our importers are all sensible to our familial spirit. Our importers really work with a family and its team. It is not only goods we sent but each bottle are our Family Ambassador in world
Why your wines are different from other wineries in your area ?
Many producers are making good wines. Today, saying “my wines are good” is obvious. The difference is in philosophy we can put in the wines. Of course our wines are full of terroir, tradition, with elegant aromas.
“We have great respect for our ancestors and the work they did. We work by blending respect for tradition with the benefits of modernism. Good quality product is our objective but this must be connected to a high quality of service which we provide by listening to our customers.”
Do you produce grapes in a organic or environmental friendly method, or with general methods ?
Officially, we are with general methods. But for more that 20 years, we look at the vineyard and add only what it needs. No more. This is the basis of a long-term agriculture
Are your wines already distributed in Asia, and if not what are the countries you are looking for new distributors ?
Our sales in Asia are quite confidential. We would really like to expend our channels in Asia. We are looking for importers, with a long term cooperation spirit. Our aim is to build and increase slowly but constantly. We are used to work with export documents in whole world whatever the country rules are.
