Tenuta Cocci Grifoni – Historical vineyard

Interview of Ms. Marilena Cocci Grifoni – Owner and General Manager – TENUTA COCCI GRIFONI WINERY for AsiaImportNews – Exclusive

Could you please tell us the story of your winery, when it was created and how it developed decades after decades ?

Located in the southern region of the Marche, in Central Italy close to the Adriatic Sea, Tenuta Cocci Grifoni’s vineyards are almost entirely surrounded by canyons, ravines, woods and areas dominated by 100-meter clay cliffs.

Approximately half of our 95 hectors of land are planted vineyards while the rest of the land balances the flora and fauna necessary for the biological cycle of the vines.

Tenuta Cocci Grifoni has an authentic heritage that is deeply rooted in our sense of place. Influenced from the ancient sharecropping system, the ‘mezzadria’, this memory of protecting and caring for each hectar of land remains alive as we continue practicing indigenous bio-diversity through our research into the almost extinct heritage grape varieties, through the constant care and protection of the vineyards and landscape while generating a high quality of life in harmony with the natural cycles of nature.

Leading Tenuta Cocci Grifoni are the fourth generation of the women of this family. Diana, the wife of Guido and the mother, is in charge of hospitality in the country house as well as overseeing the vineyards. Paola is the winemaker responsible for production and vinification. Marilena is the Commercial and Marketing Director for Italy and abroad.

How important are your export distribution compared to national distribution ?

Export distribution is important as much as the domestic market.

What sort of distributors are your customers ?

In Italy only HORECA channel; in the EU distributors;in Extra EU both importers and agents.

Why your wines are different from other wineries in your area ?

Winery has been producing authentic wines of terroir, obtained from sustainable agriculture and low oenological impact. Our tradition is to impose daily care to the land with minimum interference in the processes.

Do you produce grapes in a organic or environmental friendly method, or with general methods ?

We produce grapes in a Nature and Eco-Friendly method. Our style is resumed in the following sentence :

“The privilege of owning land entails the responsibility to pass on this resource intact not only for posterity but for a future in an era that is unknown to us.”
(Aldo Leopold)

Are your wines already distributed in Asia, and if not what are the countries you are looking for new distributors ?

We are distributed in Tokyo Japan, in China we are in Dalian for two items, Bejing with two items and south Shanghai with other three wines. We are looking for importers in South Japan, South Corea, Singapore

Is there anything who want to add about your wines, story or any news ?

I would like to tell the real story of PECORINO native grape: it was brought back and rescued from my father Guido Cocci Grifoni.

Our Legacy – Pecorino

In the 1980’s Guido Cocci Grifoni had a determined, single vision to create a great white wine in the Piceno, an area of the Marche known for full-bodied and generous red wines. The family felt our father was doing something important and rare, years later we understood he was listening to the “voice” of his land. He had re-discovered something unique, an ancient autochthonous grape variety that had disappeared for years: the Pecorino. The recovery of this grape variety, which our family has contributed to, helped to save an authentic Italian heritage and a pure expression of ‘terroir’.  Through a series of unique and now historical factors the Pecorino wine is appreciated by the world and has achieved DOCG status.
