Interview of Alastair Maling MW – Chief Group Winemaker | Head of Viticulture Foley Family Wines for AsiaImportNews – Exclusive
Could you please tell us the story of your winery, when it was created and how it developed decades after decades ?
Foley Family Wines is family owned by Bill Foley. Under the umbrella of Foley Wines we own 4 wineries in New Zealand. Two in Marlborough – Vavasour and Grove Mill and two wineries in Martinborough – Te Kairanga and Martinborough Vineyard. Each winery is one of the founding pioneers of their respective region – be in Marlborough or Martinborough therefore there is considerable history behind each brand. Our philosophy is to produce wines that ‘consumers love to drink’ with the added benefit of being award winning and sustainably grown from 100% New Zealand wine.
What sort of wines are you producing ?
We produce table wines – white and red. Varieties produced include Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Riesling, Pinot Gris, Rose, Pinot Noir and a small amount of Syrah.
How important are your export distribution compared to national distribution ?
Exporting of wine is very important to Foley Wines as this represents 70-80% of our business.
What sort of distributors are your customers ?
A mixture of companies that exclusively distribute wine or companies that also import other products and see wine as an ideal compliment to their business.
Why your wines are different from other wineries in your area ?
As pioneer winemakers in New Zealand the vineyards are some of the oldest in the region. We have 40 year old Pinot Noir vines in Martinborough and 25 year old Sauvignon Blanc vines in Marlborough.
Vavasour established in 1985. From the Awatere Valley of Marlborough producing wines that show elegance and a true sense of New Zealand. The Vavasour brand encompasses a Rooster dating back to French ancestry and has been very popular as 2017 is the year of the Rooster in China.
Grove Mill established in 1988. With a sustainable focus we maintain a wetland behind the winery to support local wildlife including the endangered Southern Bell frog.
Te Kairanga established in 1984. Established by one of the founding farmers John Martin and produces exceptional Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.
Martinborough Vineyard established in 1980 is considered an icon of the region for its Pinot Noir. Our highest prized wine Marie Zelie is famous worldwide and is exclusive to only a few.
Our wines are grown principally on our own vineyards with full control from vineyard to bottle. All of the wines are 100% New Zealand, are award winning and regularly feature on high end restaurant wine lists and served in airlines first class seating. Vavasour Sauvignon Blanc was selected as one of only 6 wines for the Air New Zealand Fine Wines of New Zealand programme.
Do you produce grapes in a organic or environmental friendly method, or with general methods ?
We grow and farm our grapes as part of the New Zealand Sustainable Grapegrowing practices.
Are your wines already distributed in Asia, and if not what are the countries you are looking for new distributors ?
Yes, a number of our brands are already distributed across Asia. The wines are very popular and we receive regular enquiries with interest to import our wines. Currently we still have opportunities in a number of Asian markets for some our brands.
