Josep Grau Vespres Wines
Interview of Mr. Josep Grau –  Winemaker – Josep Grau Viticultor for AsiaImportNews – Exclusive

Could you please tell us the story of your winery, when it was created and how it developed decades after decades ?

The winery was founded in 2003 by me, Josep Grau. I was interested in the wine sector after working in the investment banking business. I say that “If life stops, stop and listen,” and it will make me establish new priorities, consider the significance of my values, focus on my goals and have a life to live it and not to use it. I learn to live in the land of Montsant, a land that bets on its wines, on a rural and winemaking adventure where everything requires effort, passion and great enthusiasm. It could have been in another land, on another soil, with another culture and less effort but then my story would have been different and his wines would not express that character and strength.

Our winery is Marçà (El Priorat).  We produce 140.000 bottles and 7 out of 10 are exported. The company manages 36 hectares of vineyards located at the DO Montsant wine appellation, one of the eleven of Catalonia. Vines grow in different type of soils and they are between 15 and 105 years old. The majority of the vineyards are small and both pruning and harvesting are done manually. The winery defends an organic viticulture, free of pesticides and herbicides. Several grape varieties are cultivated: white and red grenache, samsó, cabernet sauvignon and syrah.

Jose Grau Viticultor – Tasting the Wines

What sort of wines are you producing ?

The main purpose is to preserve the natural attributes of the grape in the bottle. Therefore, wines are not modified at the winery. From the beginning of my career working with local yeasts and minimum levels of sulfur, to simply ensure proper protection of the wine. Fermentations are performed in cement tanks 90% of the time  and the wine is aged in casks (Stockinger ) of 2,000 liters. I’d like to reflect Montsant in the wines, the área and the vintage. Our wines have complexity and personality, fresh, with good structure and balance

  • L´Efecte Volador (red)
  • Vespres Vinyes Velles (white)
  • Vespres Blanc (white)
  • Regina (rosé)
  • La Florens (red)

I think that make wine is the most beautiful way to unite man with earth. Man drinks its essence and, by doing so, wine opens up its emotions and infuses man with pleasure. Wine is druidic.

How important are your export distribution compared to national distribution ?

We export 70% of our wines.  So, export distribution is very important for our winery but we want to increase the % of distribution in Catalonia and Spain.

Why your wines are different from other wineries in your area ?

1 -Organically grown, meticulous control over the entire process.

2 – The interaction of soils of various compositions and textures (pebbly, clayey and chalky) give this wine personalit.

3 -Organic and rational cultivation. Minimal intervention. All work was manually done

4- Three grape selection: one in vineyard and two in the winery

5 -Spontaneous fermentation using local yeasts

6- Fermentation in 17.700 litres cement deposits

7- (2000l) Stockinger foudres for the aging

8- Minimum level of sulphites

9 – Wines are a true reflection of their vintage

10 – No contribution of the oak, wines are fruity always
