Interview of DEMIERE Delphine – SALES ASSISTANT – Champagne HOSTOMME  for AsiaImportNews – Exclusive

 Could you please tell us the story of your winery, when it was created and how it developed decades after decades?

The first traces date back to the 19th century.

Champagne HOSTOMME is based in Chouilly Grand Cru, in the heart of the Côte des Blancs, home for Chardonnay.

In the 19th century, when Champagne was booming, Paul HOSTOMME fully dedicated himself to the production of grapes and to the culture of vines.
In 1930, Paul HOSTOMME introduced his son Marcel to the winemaking techniques and they produced their first vintage under the M.Hostomme brand.
Today, the great-grand-son of Paul, Laurent HOSTOMME and his wife Chrystelle are in control of the family business, which for three generations before him have seen evolving, expanding and diversifying the vineyard and the Champagne HOSTOMME range.

Actual production respects the tradition and vine culture, set up by the four generations of winemakers.
Today, the goal is to perpetuate the family know-how and to keep each year all the aromas and flavors of the wines which our customers enjoy.

What sort of wines are you producing?

In The Champagne area, of course we produce sparkling wine, a white wine thanks to a gentle pressing. At the winery, we cultivate the three dominant Champagne grape varieties: Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Meunier but mainly Chardonnay because of our location in the Champagne area. Chouilly produces mineral Blanc of Blancs thanks to the limestone soil.

How important are your export distribution compared to national distribution?

Our export distribution represents 65% on the total production whereas the national distribution represents only 35%.

What sort of distributors are your customers?

For the export part, we have got retailers, importers and agents. For the national market, we have got also the same channels distribution but we sell also to the particulars at the winery.

Why your wines are different from other wineries in your area?

We differentiate our products by our amazing terroir in Côte des Blancs, our family know how, our Vinification methods.

Recently, a new cuvée was produced: The Abysse is a new prestige Cuvee Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru Extra Brut made exclusively from our oldest vines.
The wine is aged in our cellars for 48 months after which the bottles are sealed and then transported to the Ousseant Island off the coast of Brittany where they are submerged in the Atlantic Ocean to a depth of 60 meters for a period of 12 months.

At this depth the bottles are in total darkness and at a constant temperature of 13 degrees offering ideal conditions for the continuation of the ageing process.
This is a wine of remarkable elegance with notes of chocolate, toasted and ripe fruit and a soft and rounded palate which can be enhanced by decanting to release its full aromatic potential.

Do you produce grapes in an organic or environmental friendly method, or with general methods ?

After several years of implementation, our vineyard is now certified “Sustainable Viticulture in Champagne” and HVE (High Environmental Value) level 3, the highest level.
The preservation of the environment is a permanent purpose on our exploitation because more than ever our product depends on Mother Nature.
To be certified HVE (level 3), our estate must respect a lot of norms, such as:
– Biodiversity;
– Defense strategy of the plant;
– Fertilizer management;
– Management of water resources.

Are your wines already distributed in Asia, and if not what are the countries you are looking for new distributors?

For the moment, our wines are not distributed in Asia, we are opened to all opportunities.

We would like to develop this important and potential market in the next years. For information, just to the Japan, more than 11 000 000 bottles of Champagne are sold in 2016.

Is there anything you want to add about your wines, story or any news?

Shortly a new cuvée will be available: The “Arpent” issued from only one parcel is a unique cuvée thanks to its exceptional blend of the three Champagne grape varieties: Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Meunier, and also two of the forgotten grape varieties: Pinot Blanc and Petit Meslier.

An exceptional Champagne with a slightly golden light yellow color. The bubble is lively and persistent. The nose is composed of citrus, white fruits and dry almond.
In the mouth, the attack is frank and direct with notes of white fruits, infusions with spicy and peppery nuances. The finish is long and persistent.
